The Commissioner of Yambio County in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria has reassured residents that the security situation in the town is under control despite recent gunfire incidents that have caused alarm.
Mbiko Barakati was speaking on Anissa Radio on Monday, following a pattern of shooting incidents that tore through the state capital in the recent weeks.
Barakati urged the community to remain calm and go about their daily activities as security forces work to contain the situation.
“Security organs are vigilant and monitoring the situation closely,” he stated, addressing concerns that have gripped the town in recent weeks.
Several neighborhoods, including Masia, Gangara Emilia, and Sug Siro, have been affected by sporadic gunshots, particularly in the evening hours.
This has led to fear and confusion among residents, as the source of the shootings remain unraveled.
Night businesses particularly in Masia Market, Yambio’s main night-time business hub have been affected the most.
Vendors and customers have been avoiding the market, leading to financial difficulties for business owners who depend on evening sales to sustain their livelihoods.
The Commissioner called on the public to remain alert and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities to help maintain peace in the town.
The gunfire incidents began in August when unknown armed individuals attacked the national army’s base in Suk Siro, resulting in the death of one soldier and the injury of another.
Shortly afterward, armed men opened fire at Masia night market, injuring two civilians and two SSPDF soldiers.
