On October 6, 2025, South Sudan witnessed a series of violent confrontations resulting in the deaths of 22 combatants and 1 civilian.
In Athony village near Abyei Box, a personal dispute between two officers in the Necessary Unified Forces escalated into armed clashes, claiming 14 lives including 8 SSPDF soldiers and 6 SPLA-IO fighters.
Five government troops were wounded, and one civilian was caught in the crossfire according to Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, SSPDF spokesperson
Lul said earlier that morning, SPLA-IO rebels ambushed an SSPDF convoy in Nyaguagi and Maringi villages, Nagero County, Western Equatoria.
He said government forces broke through both ambushes, killing 7 rebels and clearing roadblocks made from felled trees and debris.
In a separate operation, SSPDF successfully recaptured Katiba Town, the administrative headquarters of Mundri East County. One soldier was lost in the battle.
