Years of fighting have weakened South Sudan’s freedom of expression.

South Sudan climbs 5 notches on the World Freedom Press Index, this year, according to Reporters Without Borders. But working environment of journalists and human rights defenders has not improved.

At least 10 journalists were killed; from 2014 to 217, in South Sudan, according to Reporters Without Borders. The country’s world Press Freedom Index rankings of 2019 climbed by 5 places – from 144 in 2018 to 139. However, this is just a general view. Journalists as well as human rights defenders in the country still work in one of the most challenging and dangerous environments in the world. Apart from years of fighting, security organs that harass, detain, and interrogate journalists, editors and human rights defenders weaken freedom of expression in South Sudan. What needs to be done?
